§ Mr. Proctorasked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what is the policy of Her Majesty's Government towards the enforced mass expulsions of Ghanaians from Nigeria; whether he has had any discussions with, or made representations to, the Nigerian Government concerning this matter; and if he will make a statement.
§ Mr. OnslowThe Nigerian Government have acted to expel aliens living illegally in their country, irrespective of nationality. None of the neighbouring states principally concerned has questioned the legitimacy of this action. Nor have Her Majesty's Government done so. We have, however, through normal channels, made the Nigerian authorities aware of the concern felt in this country at the manner in which the decision was carried out. We have also provided substantial emergency aid to Ghana and some of the other countries affected both bilaterally and through the European Community.
