HC Deb 08 February 1983 vol 36 cc306-7W
Mr. Silvester

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what courses are available at De La Salle college; and what percentage of national training facilities in these courses the places represent.

Dr. Boyson

I am informed that in 1981 De La Salle college offered the following courses:

  • Diploma of Higher Education which may lead to Bachelor of Education (Ordinary or Honours).
  • Bachelor of Arts (Ordinary).
  • Specialist Teachers Certificate in Design and Technology.
  • Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE).

Of a total of 900 full-time equivalent places available at De La Salle college 480 (53 per cent.) are for initial teacher training. For 1982 it is estimated that about 680 will be filled and of these about 480 (70 per cent.) will be taken up by students following teacher training courses.

The figures given below indicate the percentage of the total intake to all initial teacher training in England and Wales represented by the 1981 intake to courses of initial teacher training at De La Salle.

The total intake to initial teacher training in England and Wales in 1981 was 18,476 of which 0.8 per cent. was to De La Salle College.

Mr. Silvester

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what courses are available at De La Salle college for in-service training; and what proportion of the college's output this represents.

Dr. Boyson

For the academic year 1982–83 the college offered the following long courses of in-service training for teachers.

  • In-service BEd (University of Manchester)
  • Diploma in Religious Studies (University of Manchester)
  • Diploma in Drama in Education (Royal Society of Arts)
  • Certificate in Design and Technology Education
  • Diploma in Mathematical Education (Mathematical Association)

The college also provides other shorter courses in response to local needs.

Th numbers of recruits to these courses vary from year to year but I understand that, measured in full-time equivalents, it is estimated that in 1982–83 about 7 per cent. of all students attending the college will follow in-service teacher training courses.
