HL Deb 21 December 1983 vol 446 c829WA
Lord Jenkins of Putney

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether, since the statement by the Baroness Young on 1st November 1983 (col. 552) that they had received no reports that persons had been sentenced to death in Malaysia under procedures condemned by the International Council of Jurists and the Malaysian Bar Council, they are now aware that nine persons were hanged in Malaysia earlier this year having been sentenced under those procedures; whether they will investigate reports that Chai Chong Yin, Noon Kuik Soon, Sim Kie Chan, and Datuk Mokhtar Hashim, Minister of Culture, have since been sentenced to death under those procedures; and whether they will request the Malaysian Government to exercise clemency in those cases.

The Minister of State, Foreign and Commonwealth Office (Baroness Young)

We are aware of the situation as described by the noble Lord. We do not believe that representations, as proposed, would be appropriate.
