HC Deb 12 December 1983 vol 50 c338W
Mr. Stan Thorne

asked the Secretary of State for Defence if he will list those manufacturing companies which have received contracts for Trident and Tornado interdiction strike and air defence variant versions.

Mr. Pattie

A very large number of companies will be involved in the procurement of Trident. In the United Kingdom the major contract for the Trident submarine and its associated equipment will involve the Vickers Shipbuilding and Engineering Group.

The main contract for the Tornado interdiction strike and air defence variant aircraft and their integral equipment is let to Panavia, which is a consortium of British Aerospace, Messerschmitt-Bolkow-Blohm and Aeritalia; the contract for the engine is let to Turbo-Union, which is a consortium of Rolls-Royce, Motoren and Turbinen Union and Fiat; and the contract for aircraft guns and ammunition is let to the German firm Mauser.

The main contractors have let subcontracts extensively in the three participating countries, Germany, Italy and the United Kingdom; and the Ministry of Defence has also let some contracts direct to British industry.
