asked the Secretary of State for Wales what percentage of school leavers from maintained schools in Wales left with (a) O-level grades A to E and/or CSE grades 1–5, (b) one or more A-level and (c) no O, CSE or A-level qualifications in 1978–79 and in 1981–82.

Mr. John Stradling Thomas

In 1978–79, 75.9 per cent. of school leavers left with O-level grades A to E and/ or CSE grades 1–5; 13.7 per cent. with one or more A-level; and 24.1 per cent. with no O, CSE or A-level qualifications. The corresponding figures for 1981–82 are 80.7 per cent., 15.3 per cent. and 19.3 per cent. respectively.
