HC Deb 12 December 1983 vol 50 cc328-9W
Mr. Parry

asked the Secretary of State for Employment how many health and safety inspectors were employed in the construction industry in Scotland in November 1979; and what were the figures at the latest available date.

Mr. Gummer

Eight factory inspectors were employed on the inspection of construction work in Scotland in November 1979. On 1 November 1983 nine inspectors were so employed.

Mr. Parry

asked the Secretary of State for Employment if he is satisfied with the standard of health and safety in the construction industry in Scotland; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Gummer

I refer the hon. Member to my reply to his question on 29 November— [Vol. 49, c. 447]—about the standards of health and safety in the construction industry in England and Wales. The Health and Safety Commission and Health and Safety Executive are equally concerned about the number of fatal and other accidents in the construction industry in Scotland.

Mr. Parry

asked the Secretary of State for Employment how many workers have been killed in the construction industry in Scotland in each of the past five years, to the latest date.

Mr. Gummer

I shall reply to the hon. Member as soon as possible.
