In January 1983, according to returns from English local education authorities, 155,004 children were46W assessed as being in need of special educational treatment and were either receiving this or awaiting suitable placements. A breakdown of this figure in terms of age groups is not available. The figures for Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland are the responsibility of my right hon. Friends the respective Secretaries of State.
