HC Deb 28 October 1982 vol 29 c524W
31. Mr. Palmer

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what is his latest estimate of the current surplus of the National Loans Fund.

Mr. Brittan

At close on Wednesday 27 October, the National Loans Fund had its customary working balance of £2 million. At close on 25 and 26 October however, the fund held balances of some £60 million and £50 million respectively with the banking department of the Bank of England. This is the first time that the customary working balance of £2 million has been exceeded since the Finance Act 1982.
