HC Deb 29 November 1982 vol 33 c6W
Mr. Alfred Morris

asked the Secretary of State for Energy how many representations he has received about the effects of standing charges for gas and electricity on frail elderly and other people at special risk; what replies he has sent; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Mellor

Several hundred letters have been received on the subject of standing charges this year, many of which concern their impact on the bills of elderly consumers. The majority do not refer to disability or infirmity. Replies have reflected points raised by the correspondents, including where appropriate the availability of assistance with fuel bills from the Department of Health and Social Security and the measures announced in my reply to the hon. Member for Cannock (Mr. Roberts).—[Vol. 29, c.132.]
