HC Deb 29 November 1982 vol 33 c17W
Mr. Dalyell

asked the Prime Minister what assessment she makes of the prospects for a formal cessation of hostilities in the South Atlantic.

The Prime Minister

As far as the British Government are concerned, hostilities in the South Atlantic have ceased. The Argentine Government have not made an unequivocal declaration to the same effect.

Mr. Dalyell

asked the Prime Minister if she will publish in the Official Report the letter she wrote to Mr. Michael Walker of Walker Timber Products Ltd., Carriden Sawmills, Bo'ness, West Lothian, on 27 October on the subject of the import from Sweden of structural items as part of a contract for houses on the Falkland Islands.

The Prime Minister

No. It is not for me to publish letters written to private citizens.

Mr. Dalyell

asked the Prime Minister whether, pursuant to her answer of 23 November to the hon. Member for Edinburgh, East (Mr. Strang) that there can be no negotiations on sovereignty for the Falkland Islands, it is the policy of Her Majesty's Government that, regardless of the fulfilment of any preconditions, no form of negotiation is contemplated.

The Prime Minister

There can be no question of negotiation on the sovereignty of the Falkland Islands, and I have at present no evidence to suggest that negotiations with Argentina on other issues are likely to be productive.

Mr. Dalyell

asked the Prime Minister whether, pursuant to her answer of 23 November, she has discussed the United States vote at the United Nations on the issue of sovereignty with the President of the United States.

The Prime Minister

I have nothing to add to the replies I have already given to the hon. Member on this subject.
