HC Deb 24 November 1982 vol 32 c503W
Mr. Hannam

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science how much money has been allocated for in-service training of teachers to deal with children with special educational needs; whether his Department monitors the use of that money; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Waldegrave

The main financial responsibility for in-service training lies with local education authorities. The Department does not monitor their expenditure on in-service training subject by subject.

My right hon. Friend intends to introduce in 1983–84 a limited scheme of in-service training grants in certain specified fields. Training of teachers to deal with children with special educational needs may be one of these fields.
