asked Her Majesty's Government:

Which sections of the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 have not yet been brought into force; when they expect these outstanding sections to be implemented; and in particular when they intend to implement the provisions of Part I of the Act which will increase the protection provided for bats.

The following sections have not yet been brought into force:

  • 1 to 11,
  • 13 to 27,
  • 29 to 32,
  • 41,
  • 46,
  • 53 to 58,
  • 63, 64 and
  • 72(4), (6) and (14).
The necessary preparations for implementing Part I of the Wildlife and Countryside Act (including those parts relating to bats) are well advanced. My right honourable friend intends to bring it into operation very soon. He also expects to bring Section 46 (Membership of National Park Authorities) into force shortly. Commencement orders for the other provisions will be made as soon as the necessary administrative arrangements and other preparations have been completed.
