§ Dr. BoysonThe latest available figures are for 1980 when a total of 384,000 A-level pass grades were awarded to candidates for examinations conducted by the English GCE boards. This compares with a figure of 301,000 in 1971. Comparable figures for 1961 are not available, but in that year the total number of A-level passes awarded by the English and Welsh GCE boards was 168,000.
