HC Deb 10 May 1982 vol 23 c166W
Mr. Bendall

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether he will announce an increase in London taxi fares.

Mr. Whitelaw

I have made an order increasing the London taxi fare tariff by an average of 10 per cent. with effect from 30 May.

The new tariff will incorporate a minimum fare of 50 pence (including a hiring charge of 30 pence) for the first 630 yards of 2 minutes 24 seconds. The rate will then be 10 pence for each 315 yards or 1 minute 12 seconds up to 6 miles and 10 pence for each 210 yards of 48 seconds thereafter.

In order to ensure an adequate supply of taxis at night, weekends and public holidays, the surcharge for hirings on weekday nights and on Saturdays will rise to 40 pence. The extra charge for Saturday nights, Sunday and public holidays will be 60 pence except on Christmas day when it will be £2.
