§ Mrs. Renée Short
asked the Prime Minister how much has been spent on research and development for each of the last 10 years at constant prices; if she will break the figures down to show the amounts spent on defence, education, science and technology, energy, agriculture, health, environment and social objectives; and if she will give the comparable figures for each of the European Economic Community countries, the United States of America and Japan.
§ The Prime Minister
The data requested—in terms of expenditure by central Governments using broadly similar objectives—are available in the Library of the House in 181W section 4 of a publication of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development entitled "Science and Technology Indicators—Basic Statistical Series"—volume A (ref—DSTI/SPR/81.28). A companion document—volume B of the same title (ref—DSTI/SPR/82.05) details gross national expenditure but with no analysis by objectives.
