§ The Prime MinisterMany indicators point to an improved level of activity. During the second half of last year total output recovered by 1 per cent. and manufacturing output by some 2 per cent. Last year saw more vacancies, more overtime and a dramatic fall in short-time working. New orders in volume terms increased by nearly 20 per cent. in engineering and 10 per cent. in construction last year compared with the second half of 1980.
