§ Mr. Rookerasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer (1) if he will set out the starting point of the higher rate income tax bands as a proportion of average manual and non-manual earnings in each of the past four years;
(2) if he will list the numbers given in each of his Budget Statements since assuming office in respect of the numbers taken out of income tax; and if he will give the number of taxpayers for each of those years;
(3) how many taxpayers have paid the higher rates of income tax in each of the past four years.

§ Sir Brandon Rhys Williamsasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer, further to the reply to the hon. Member for Kensington, of 25 January, Official Report, column 227, what is the total estimated 1981–82 income in each of the following income categories; and what is the total anticipated income tax payable by each category on that income (a) between £15,000 and £25,000, (b) between £25,000 and £40,000 and (c) above £40,000 per annum.
§ Mr. Ridley[pursuant to his reply, 26 February 1982, c. 524]: The estimates are as follows, together with figures for the income ranges listed in my previous reply. These have been revised from the earlier provisional figures, on the receipt of further information. The estimates relate to tax units; that is, married couples are counted as one and their incomes combined.
