§ Mrs. Shirley Williamsasked the Secretary of State for Employment what information is available to him as to the number of skilled engineering craftsmen required to be recruited by the engineering industry in 1982; and what is the number of apprentices who will complete their indentures in 1982.
§ Mr. Peter MorrisonA sample survey undertaken by the Engineering Industry Training Board indicates that in the 1982–83 financial year about 6,000 craft and 3,000 technician apprentices will be recruited by the industry. The board considers this intake inadequate to the longer-term skill needs of the industry, and as a result the Government have made £4 million available to the board to encourage the recruitment of further apprentices in this period.
