Mr. Ray Powell

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many police officers there were in police authorities in Wales in May 1979; and what is the latest total number.

Mr. Mayhew

In May 1979 the total strength of the police forces in Wales was 6,098, compared with 6,276 on 31 April 1982.

Mr. Proctor

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department, pursuant to his reply to the hon. Member for Basildon of 24 May, Official Report, c. 220 and 221, what representations he received from chief constables with regard to positive discrimination in police recruitment favouring members of the ethnic minorities prior to the letter issued by his Department; what replies, if any, he has since received from chief constables; and if he will make a statement.

None, but chief officers share our concern to improve recruitment from the ethnic minority communities and the proposal was discussed with them before the letter was sent to the Association of Chief Police Officers.
