The Prime Minister

As the House knows, British forces in the Falklands are preparing to re-possess Port Stanley. The Secretary-General of the United Nations and certain members of the Security Council have proposed various formulations for a ceasefire; none provides the unequivocal link between an immediate Argentine withdrawal and a ceasefire, which is the only basis on which we could agree to the latter. I have made it clear publicly that if the Argentines tell us they are prepared to withdraw, we shall enable them to do so with safety, dignity and despatch. So far we have had no positive response.

Meanwhile our Western friends and allies at Versailles made it clear to us that their support continues.
