HC Deb 08 June 1982 vol 25 c60W
Mr. Michael Brown

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what criteria are governing his decision on the final grant to Action on Smoking and Health for 1982–83; for what purposes the interim payment of £22,500 has been made; and what accounts he has received for his Department's grant for 1981–82.

Mr. Geoffrey Finsberg

We shall take into account the contribution that the proposed activities of Action on Smoking and Health will make to our policies and the degree of priority we give to supporting activities in this field. We shall also take into consideration the organisation's financial position. The interim payment of £22,500 was made to enable the current activities of the organisation to continue until we have reached a decision on the final rate of grant for 1982–83. We have received a draft income and expenditure account for the year ending 31 March 1982, which the Department will be discussing with the organisation and we shall, as a condition of grant, in the normal way be receiving audited accounts in due course.

Mr. Freud

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if he envisages any change in his Department's financial support for Action on Smoking and Health; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Geoffrey Finsberg

The Department expects to continue to give financial support to Action on Smoking and Health.
