Mr. Golding

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what has been the average amount of redundancy payments paid by the State and by employers in 1978, 1979, 1980, 1981 and 1982.

Mr. Waddington

Information is available only in respect of statutory redundancy payments made under the provisions of the Employment Protection (Consolidation) Act 1978. The table shows the total amounts, and the average amount per employee, which was paid by employers, refunded to employers from the redundancy fund and paid direct to employees from the redundancy fund in the years referred to.
