HC Deb 30 July 1982 vol 28 cc803-4W
Mr. Strang

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will give the total number of persons of retirement age resident in (a) East Lothian, (b) Musselburgh and (c) Scotland; and if he will estimate what percentage of the total population in (i) East Lothian, (ii) Musselburgh and (iii) Scotland this represents.

Mr. John MacKay

The 1981 census recorded 14,580 persons of retirement age as resident in East Lothian: this represented 18.5 per cent. of the total resident population. Corresponding figures for the locality of Musselburgh and Scotland were, respectively 3,731 (19.8 per cent.) and 847,626 (16.8 per cent.).

The Registrar General's mid-1981 estimates of population for East Lothian and Scotland show slightly higher figures: the percentages are, however, only marginally different. Such estimates are not prepared for areas smaller than local government districts.

Mr. Strang

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will give the number of households headed by a person of retirement age in (a) East Lothian, (b) Musselburgh and (c) Scotland; and if he will show what percentage this represents of all households in these areas.

Mr. John MacKay

The 1981 census recorded the following numbers of private households with usual residents headed by a person of retirement age:

Number
(a) East Lothian 8,836
(b) Musselburgh (locality) 2,299
(c) Scotland 531,953

These represented 31.1 per cent., 32.6 per cent. and 29.8 per cent. respectively, of all private households with usual residents.
