asked the Secretary of State for Social Services how many consultants have had part-time contracts or full-time contracts with the National Health Service for each year since 1974.

The numbers of medical and dental consultants in England and Wales at 30 September each year since 1974 are as follows. Maximum part-time consultants are shown separately because they undertake all the responsibilities of a full-time post. The figures for part-time staff include honorary contract holders.
