HC Deb 30 July 1982 vol 28 cc731-2W
Mr. Spearing

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science, in the course of the Government's consideration of the self-supporting character of the Bethnal Green museum, what information he has on other museums within his Department's responsibility which would not qualify to remain open after the application of the same criterion.

Mr. Waldegrave

None of the national museums is entirely self-financing. The contribution made by revenue earning to the running costs of the national museums and their out stations varies between one institution and another. The policy of my right hon. Friend the Minister for the Arts is to encourage them to take opportunities to develop their income whenever possible and appropriate.
