HC Deb 30 July 1982 vol 28 c766W
Mr. Trotter

asked the Secretary of State for Employment how many employees in the United Kingdom are citizens of (a) the Republic of Ireland, (b) other European Economic Community countries, excluding the Republic of Ireland, (c) Australia, Canada and New Zealand, (d) other Commonwealth countries, (e) Pakistan and (f) other foreign countries.

Mr. Alison

Estimates of the number of employees by nationality are derived from the labour force survey and are subject to considerable sampling error. The latest available information, for 1979, is as follows:

Employees by nationality
United Kingdom May-June 1979
Nationality Thousands
Republic of Ireland 280
Other European Communities* countries 100
Australia, Canada and New Zealand 30
Other Commonwealth countries 210
Pakistan 20
Other foreign countries 150
All non-United Kingdom nationals 790
*Includes Greece.
