§ Mr. Arthur Lewisasked the Secretary of State for the Home Department to what extent Members of the European Assembly receive pensions and redundancy payments; and whether British Members of Parliament who are also members of the Assembly are able to claim dual pension and redundancy payments.
§ Mr. Mayhew[pursuant to his reply, 29 June 1982, c. 268]: Under section 3 of the European Assembly (Pay and Pensions) Act 1979 a Member of the European Parliament who stands at a general election to the European Parliament and is not elected is entitled to a severance grant equal to 3 months salary at the rate applicable to him immediately before the election. The severance grant entitlements of Members of Parliament are not affected by membership of the European Parliament.
