Mr. Tilley

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if, pursuant to his reply to the hon. Member for Newham, North-West (Mr. Lewis) on 25 March, Official Report, c. 384, he will set out in the Official Report the provisions of section 1 of the Metropolitan Police Act 1829 relating to the appointment of the Commissioner of Police of the Metropolis which remain unrepealed.

Section 1 of the Metropolitan Police Act 1829, as amended by the Justices of the Peace Act 1968 and the Administration of Justice Act 1973, now readsIt shall be lawful for his Majesty to cause a new police office to be established in the City of Westminster, and from time to time by warrant under his sign manual to appoint during his Majesty's pleasure a Commissioner of Police of the Metropolis to execute the duties of chief officer of the police force hereby established, together with such other duties as shall be hereinafter specified, or as shall be from time to time directed by one of his Majesty's principal secretaries of state, for the more efficient administration of the police within the limits hereinafter mentioned.
