Under a long-standing agreement the Motor Insurers' Bureau pays compensation for death or bodily injury in cases where it can be assumed that, had the driver been traced, he would have been liable for damages. The bureau made 1,394 awards in 1981 at a cost of £4.1 million. The accelerated procedure introduced initially for small claims has proved helpful in speeding up settlements, and the present limit of £10,000 is to be extended to £20,000.
