17. Mr. Haselhurst

26. Mr. William Hamilton

asked the Secretary of State for Employment if he will make a statement on the problems of the long-term unemployed; and what new initiatives he intends to take to resolve them.

47. Mr. Ward

asked the Secretary of State for Employment whether he is yet in a position to make a statement about the proposed scheme for providing work on local community projects for the long-term unemployed, announced in the Budget.

Mr. Alison

My right hon. Friend has asked the Manpower Services Commission to consider the details of the new initiative announced by my right hon. and learned Friend the Chancellor of the Exchequer on 9 March. We understand that they have discussed the lines of a possible scheme and intend to return to the matter at their meeting later this month. We would hope to be able to make a further statement shortly thereafter.

29. Mr. Dover

asked the Secretary of State for Employment if he has received any representations on schemes designed to help the longer-term unemployed.

Mr. Alison

A number of organisations have made constructive comments. They will be considered in the light of the proposals we hope shortly to receive from the Manpower Services Commission concerning the scheme for the long-term unemployed first announced by my right hon. and learned Friend the Chancellor of the Exchequer on 9 March—[Vol. 19, c.732]
