asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland (1) what was the total number of bursaries in management studies awarded by the Department of Education in 1981–82;

(2) what was the total number of post-graduate bursaries awarded by the Department of Education to both male and female students in 1981–82; what was the total value of such awards; and what were the subjects covered.

A total of 148 postgraduates bursaries were awarded by the Department of Education to 79 male and 69 female students in the 1981–82 academic year. Their total value is estimated at £500,000.

The subjects covered were art and design, business studies, continuing education, European studies, industrial design, journalism, languages, legal studies, library studies, management, recreation management, marketing and tourism.

These awards included 23 bursaries in management studies as follows:

In addition, 187 awards for postgraduate certificate and diploma in education courses at teacher training institutions were made to 75 male and 112 female students in the year. Their total value is estimated as £400,000.
