Mr. Marlow

asked the Secretary of State for Trade whether he will study the measures recently introduced by France to support its footwear industry; and if he will consider introducing a similar scheme in the United Kingdom.

The Government are much concerned at reports of measures likely to affect imports into France of footwear and certain other products. In accordance with the Treaty of Rome, the European Commission is examining their conformity with Community law. I expect the Council of Ministers to discuss the subject very shortly.

I have no plans for any similar scheme in the United Kingdom.
