HL Deb 21 January 1982 vol 426 c746WA
Lord Brockway asked

Her Majesty's Government:

How far the fees of overseas students at British universities are funded privately or by scholarships and, if the information is unavailable, whether they will initiate an inquiry so as to evaluate how far students in poorer circumstances are denied higher education.

Lord Elton

Information relating to the academic Year 1980–81 is as follows:—

Sponsored Self-financed
Undergraduates 5,100 10,200
Postgraduates 10,700 5,200
All levels 15,800 15,400

Students from European Community countries, who pay the subsidised home rate of fee, are excluded from the figures; 2,000 such students were enrolled at British universities in 1980–81.
