HC Deb 18 January 1982 vol 16 c82W
Mr. Chapman

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer, what is his estimate of the extra revenue which would have been raised in the current financial year if the existing duties on beer, wines and spirits had been increased by 5 per cent., 7½ per cent. and 10 per cent., respectively, the existing duties on tobacco had been increased by 5 per cent., 10 per cent. and 20 per cent., respectively, and the existing duty on petrol at the pumps had been increased by 5 pence, 10 pence and 20 pence a gallon, respectively.

Mr. Bruce-Gardyne

It is estimated the extra revenue would be:

Duty Duty increase Extra revenue in 1981–82
(per cent) (£ million)
Beer 5 70
105
10 135
Wine 5 15
25
10 35
Spirits 5 25
55
10 45
Tobacco* 5 145
10 290
20 580
(p per gallon)
Petrol 5 260
10 520
20 1,040
* The tobacco estimates have been calculated on the assumption that both the specific and the ad valorem duties on cigarettes were increased by the amounts specified. The result of this is that the total tax on cigarettes would be increased by approximately 6¾ per cent, 13½ per cent. and 28 per cent.
