§ Mr. SproatThe principal responsibilities in the maritime field exercised by the Department of Trade, for the United Kingdom as a whole, cover policy towards the United Kingdom merchant fleet; the safety of merchant382W ships, including their construction and equipment; safety of navigation—including certain responsibilities under the Coast Protection Act 1949; the registration of United Kingdom vessels and seamen; the certification of seamen; manning; pilotage; civil marine search and rescue and the prevention and combating of marine pollution.
