HC Deb 18 February 1982 vol 18 cc208-9W
Mr. McCusker

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland if he will take measures to ensure that no temporary teaching vacancy is filled by a retired teacher.

Mr. Scott

No. I do not propose to take such measures because to do so, could result in classes without suitably qualified teachers, particularly in specialist subjects. Appointments of retired teachers to temporary posts are closely monitored by the Department of Education, and school authorities are required to justify the continuation of such appointments.
