§ Mr. Fosterasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if, pursuant to his reply of 28 January, Official Report, columns 408–9, concerning the number of civil servants employed in the Northern region, he will set out the Departments concerned and the percentage change in numbers, in each Department for each year since 1974.
§ Mr. Hayhoe[pursuant to his reply, 15 February 1982, c. 28] Staff in post at 1 January 1981 and annual changes in 1978, 1979, 1980 for the main departments in the Northern region are as follows.
Regional figures for industrial staff at the beginning of 1975 and 1976 are not centrally available. Rounded figures only are available for the beginning of 1977 and from these it can be deduced that in 1977 the size of Inland Revenue increased by about 4 per cent., Department for National Savings decreased by around 3 per cent. and there was little change for the Ministry of Defence, Employment Group, Environment—including PSA—and Transport, Health and Social Security and Home Office in the region.
