HC Deb 09 February 1982 vol 17 cc352-3W
Mr. Russell Johnston

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland how many households in Scotland are in receipt of (a) rent rebates and (b) allowances.

Mr. Rifkind

It is estimated that, as at 30 September 1981, there were 285,100 households in receipt of rent rebates and 20,200 households in receipt of rent allowances. This information is taken from the rent returns received to date from 50 local authorities, four new towns and the SSHA and includes an estimate to take account of the seven returns outstanding. I should also mention that 150,000 households receive assistance with their housing costs through supplementary benefit.
