§ Mr. Skinnerasked the Secretary of State for Education and Science how many colleges have established disabled 318W certificate courses to improve sports coaching to disabled people; and if he will take steps to encourage colleges to establish these courses.
§ Mr. WaldegraveHigh level courses in sport and recreation, human movement studies or physical education are run by universities, polytechnics or colleges. These include sports coaching and qualify students for work in schools, further education or the community. At least four institutions include a compulsory element of study related to sensory, physical or mental handicap. A number of others offer an optional element. A one year part time course at Derby Lonsdale college of higher education leads to a certificate in physical activities for the disabled.
The governing bodies of sport offer specific coaching awards at elementary and advanced levels for those wishing to coach or instruct in clubs, residential and adult institutions in the community.
The development of all these courses requires understanding both of the sport or activity and the nature of the disabiliy. The Department's short course programme includes in-service training for teachers in physical education with children in special need.
