§ Mrs. Renée Shortasked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many new prisons he intends should be built by 1990; how many places are involved in each case; and if he is satisfied that these will alleviate present overcrowding.
§ Mr. MayhewDetails of the prison building programme are given in appendix 8 to the "Report on the work of the Prison Department 1980", Cmnd. 8228. The programme should produce some 5,000 new places by the early 1990s. It is impossible to estimate how many of these places will be required to replace existing accommodation which will have to be taken out of use; some of the new places will however go towards alleviating overcrowding.
