18. Mr. Douglas

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs how many nations have currently signed the law of the sea convention.

Mr. Rifkind

The convention was signed on 10 December on behalf of 117 States, the Cook Islands, and the United Nations Council for Namibia.

31. Mr. Maxton

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what proposals Her Majesty's Government have made for the amendment of the draft treaty on the law of the sea.

36. Mr. George Robertson

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he intends to propose any amendments to the draft treaty on the law of the sea.

39. Mr. James Johnson

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he proposes to suggest any amendments to the law of the sea treaty.

Mr. Rifkind

As I explained in my statement to the House on 2 December, we will be exploring the prospects for amendments with interested States with a view to obtaining satisfactory improvements in the deep sea mining regime.
