They represent the yen-sterling and yen-dollar exchange rates expressed as index numbers and deflated by relative retail prices as published in Internationl Financial Statistics. Thus, the larger is the number, the greater is the purchasing power of the yen, in the United Kingdom and the United States. The data are readily available only from 1949 and up to August 1982.
