§ Mr. RidleyFor the married man on average earnings with two children and no income tax reliefs other than the married man's allowance, it is estimated that the percentage of his gross earnings taken in income tax less child benefit has been reduced between 1978–79 and 1982–83 from 14.7 per cent. to 14.5 per cent.; while his national insurance contributions have increased from 6.5 per cent. to 8.75 per cent.—assuming he is not contracted out of the earnings-related part of the State pension scheme.
