§ The Prime MinisterThe proportion of girls among the candidates for A-level examinations in science subjects and mathematics has been increasing, but they still represent only 30 per cent. of A-level candidates in mathematics, 21 per cent. in physics and 34 per cent. in chemistry. We hope that more girls with an aptitude for mathematics and science will take advantage of the opportunities open to them, and there are a number of current national and local initiatives designed to encourage girls to continue studying mathematics and science and to improve their performance in these subjects.
