HC Deb 06 December 1982 vol 33 cc415-8W
Mr. McTaggart

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will give a breakdown of those unemployed in Glasgow by (a) age group and (b) area employment office at October 1982.

Mr. McTaggart

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will publish an analysis of those unemployed in Glasgow in October 1982 by Standard Industrial Classification order; and if he will provide similar information on the number of registered vacancies.

Mr. Alexander Fletcher

Table 1 following gives an analysis by Standard Industrial Classification of those registered as unemployed in the Glasgow travel-to-work area on 13 May 1982, the latest date for which the information is available. The analysis has since been discontinued.

Table 2 gives an analysis by Standard Industrial Classification of the number of unfilled vacancies at employment and careers offices in the Glasgow travel-to-work area on 12 August 1982, the latest date for which this information is available. The unfilled vacancy figures represent only those vacancies notified to employment and careers offices and remaining unfilled on the day of the count. They do not purport to be a measure of all vacancies in the area. Because of possible duplication the figures for Employment and Careers Offices should not be added together.

Mr. McTaggart

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what is the current ratio of the number of those unemployed in Glasgow to the number of registered job vacancies; and what was the corresponding ratio in May 1979.

Mr. Alexander Fletcher

The table following gives the number of people registered as unemployed at, and unfilled vacancies notified to, employment offices and careers offices within the Glasgow travel-to-work area in October 1982 and May 1979. The vacancy figures do not purport to be a measure of all vacancies in the area and because of possible duplication between the vacancies notified to employment offices and careers offices the two figures should not be added together. They cannot therefore be used to provide the ratios requested.

October 1982 May 1979
Numbers registered as unemployed 101,159 48,525
Unfilled vacancies at:
Employment offices 3,094 6,160
Careers offices 28 209

Note:

The Glasgow travel-to-work area comprises the thirteen employment office areas within Glasgow city together with the Barrhead, Clydebank, Cumbernauld, Kilsyth and Kirkintilloch employment office areas.

Mr. McTaggart

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will provide a breakdown by number and percentage of those in Glasgow who have been unemployed for one year or over by age group.

Mr. Alexander Fletcher

The table following gives an analysis by age group of the numbers registered as unemployed in the Glasgow travel-to-work area at 14 October 1982, the latest date for which information is available.
