§ Mr. Lawrenceasked the Secretary of State for Transport (1) when he expects construction of the second Burton bridge over the river Trent to begin; and when it is expected to be completed;
(2) what is the estimated cost of the proposed second Burton bridge over the river Trent; and how it will be paid for.
§ Mrs. ChalkerThe new Burton bridge and its approach roads will be built and paid for by Staffordshire county council as local highway authority. From inquiries made of the council, I understand that it is its aim for works to start this autumn and finish before the end of 1984. The estimated cost is £4.7 million at November 1980 prices. This will be met from the county's capital expenditure allocation and will be eligible for transport supplementary grant.
