HC Deb 28 October 1981 vol 10 cc364-5W
Mr. Ernie Ross

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what percentage of academic staff posts in Scottish universities are held by women; and what is the corresponding percentage for heads of department.

Mr. Waldegrave:

In 1979–80, the latest year for which figures are available, 9.6 per cent. of academic staff posts—comprising professors, readers, lecturers and assistant lecturers and others—in Scottish universities were held by women. No comparable information exists in respect of heads of departments. However 1.8 per cent. of professors in Scottish universities were women.

Mr. Ernie Ross

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what were the numbers of both men and women (a) applying for and (b) accepting places at Scottish universities in each of the past five years; and if he will express these figures in percentage terms.

Mr. Waldegrave:

The numbers of United Kingdom domiciled men and women applying for and being accepted for places at Scottish universities through the Universities Central Council on Admissions in each of the past five years, are shown in the following table:

1976–77 7,503 3,365 44.8 5,082 2,374 46.7
1977–78 7,862 3,653 46.5 5,256 2,545 48.4
1978–79 7,419 3,697 49.8 4,926 2,654 53.9
1979–80 7,466 3,659 49.0 5,412 2,643 48.8
1980–81 7,841 3,816 48.7 5,860 2,886 49.2

The figures do not cover all home applications or acceptances as some Scottish universities do not participate fully in the UCCA scheme.

Mr. Ernie Ross

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will provide a percentage breakdown by sex of the number of postgraduates at Scottish universities in each of the past five years.

Mr. Waldegrave:

The information in the following table relates to all postgraduates, both full and part-time, at Scottish universities:

1976–77 75 25 7,782
1977–78 75 25 7,816
1978–79 74 26 7,848
1979–80 73 27 7,680
1980–81 72 28 7,842
