asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what response he has had to his circular 2/81 concerning surplus places in primary and secondary schools.

Mr. William Shelton:

The circular invited LEAs to submit information by 31 December 1981 about the number of surplus school places in their areas up to 1986 and their plans for taking those places out of use. As yet no returns have been received.
