asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what plans he has to encourage increased participation in education programmes amongst 16 to 19-year-olds in the North of England.

Mr. William Shelton:

My right hon. Friend is concerned to increase participation in all parts of the country. Additional expenditure of £60 million in 1982–83 has been announced to enable 50,000 more young people to stay on in full-time education.
