Mr. Richard Wainwright asked the Secretary of State for Employment how many jobs in (a) the West Yorkshire metropolitan county council area and (b) the Greater Manchester metropolitan county council area are currently dependent on the temporary short-time working subsidy; and how these figures compare with those for the same time in 1980 and 1979.

Mr. Peter Morrison:

I regret that statistics in the form requested are not readily available for 1979 and 1980 and could be extracted only at disproportionate cost. However, the following table shows the figures requested for September 1981:
